Edvard Munch - Monumental - Munch Museum - Oslo

In a purpose-built hall spanning two floors, you can experience some of the largest paintings Edvard Munch ever made. These enormous works of art are versions of motifs Munch developed for the University of Oslo's new auditorium in connection with its 100th anniversary in 1911. Munch participated in a competition with several others and worked tirelessly on the motifs for several years, resulting in several hundred works and sketches. In order to be able to paint in formats of up to fifty square meters, he built a number of outdoor studios on his property, and created several versions of the motifs in different sizes.

We invite the audience inside Munch's creative process in his first major project for a public space, and show how he succeeded in realizing these works with extraordinary energy, creativity and courage.  The sun is highlighted as a new main motif in Munch's career - a symbol of the power and creativity of life, and a work that contains a number of stories related to natural science, religion and the creation of the universe.
