Set against the backdrop of cultural awakening and artistic rebellion, Nigerian Modernism celebrates the remarkable achievements of Nigerian artists working in the years before and after national independence from British colonial rule in 1960. Emerging at a time of profound political, social and intellectual transformation, these artists helped shape a bold visual language that reflected both a changing nation and a wider global dialogue.

Nigerian Modernism traces the story of dynamic artistic networks that spanned Zaria, Ibadan, Lagos and Enugu, as well as London, Munich and Paris. Through influential collectives such as the Zaria Art Society and the Mbari Artists' and Writers' Club, artists, writers and thinkers came together to challenge convention and redefine the role of art in a newly independent Africa. Blending Nigerian, African and European techniques and traditions, they created vibrant, multidimensional works that were deeply rooted in heritage while also forward-looking and experimental.
