Constellations - Fondation Beyeler - Basel

Constellations is the inaugural exhibition of the newly expanded Fondation Beyeler. For the first time, a single exhibition unfolds across the new Wyss Museum designed by Peter Zumthor and the Beyeler Museum by Renzo Piano, as well as the enlarged park and the repurposed historic buildings.
With around 230 works, it is the largest presentation of the collection in the museum's history, placing at its centre the dialogue between art, architecture and nature for which the Fondation Beyeler is known worldwide. Varied spaces, atmospheres and viewpoints create striking encounters between the works and their surroundings.
The title refers to Alexander Calder's Constellations of 1943, several of which are on view and serve as the exhibition's guiding thread. Like star patterns in the night sky, the shifting groupings of works open up new relationships and perspectives – and as some rooms change with the seasons, every visit offers something new.
Masterpieces from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries in the collection, including recent acquisitions and gifts, are shown alongside major loans from Swiss and international private collections, with works by Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, René Magritte, Alberto Giacometti, Mark Rothko, Joan Mitchell, Cy Twombly, Louise Bourgeois, Gerhard Richter, Marlene Dumas, Wolfgang Tillmans and Otobong Nkanga, among many others.
