This permanent exhibition at SMK – the National Gallery of Denmark – takes visitors from the birth of Danish painting through the celebrated Golden Age and into the social and artistic transformations of the nineteenth century, culminating in the Modern Breakthrough and the dawn of Modernism.
Across 24 rooms and around 400 paintings, the exhibition offers both a broad historical overview and a series of focused themes, highlighting artists of particular importance while also shedding light on overlooked chapters in Danish art history.
Visitors encounter masterpieces by some of Denmark and the Nordic region’s most influential artists, including Nicolai Abildgaard, C.W. Eckersberg, Jens Juel, Christen Købke, P.S. Krøyer, L.A. Ring and Vilhelm Hammershøi. Together, their works reveal a period of remarkable change: from classical ideals and intimate portraits to national landscapes, everyday realism and the emergence of modern artistic vision.
